A Lighter View of the Data Center World :)

I have tried simplifying few things related to Data Center world.
  1. Cold aisle means air conditioned air passing underneath. But Hot aisle does not mean Fire passing underneath.
  2. Rack mounting and Mount Points have absolutely nothing to do with Mountains. Rack mounting means you get server and place it appropriately in the rack & power on etc. Mount points are like folder structure.
  3. Raid 1 & 5 have nothing to do with Tomb Raider, please. Raid 1 means each disc in the storage has redundancy built in. In case of Raid 5, there is one disc redundancy available between 5 discs.
  4. Round Robin manner has nothing to do with Robinhood going around the glob. This means, for example when there are 3 servers, load balancing happens like 1st user attached to 1st server, then 2nd user attached to 2nd Server, 3rd user attached to 3rd server, 4th user attached to 1st server and so on..
  5. SL8500 can be dismantled in 85 pieces but Sun T2000 is only one piece. There aren't 2000 pieces.
  6. BYNET cables does not mean cables by the side of net. It's just some sort of weird thick cable !
  7. Ethernet cables with RJ45 sounds like cables held in a pub by Radio Jockey. Actually it's a simple network connection cable
  8. Staging area does not actually have a stage to perform. This refers to Staging environment.
  9. Gen 3 LTO Tape sounds like 1 Generals and 3 Lieutenants discussing about tapes. Nop. This is just a media used to backup data thru tape library.
  10. Tomcat has nothing to do with Tomb raider, Tomato catch-up or Cats. It's simply Apache software.
  11. One standard rack means 42 U. If a server needs 3 Us, does not mean that rack can house 14 such servers. Don't forget the space in between servers for heating etc.
  12. One Terminal Server only needs 4 U space in a rack. One super dome means almost 3 rack space, huh !
PS
This is written only in a lighter manner. No commercial, legal or anything otherwise is intended.

Rohit
